Truth in taxation now a reality statewide

This new law, which went into effect June 18, compels local taxing jurisdictions (other than school districts) to hold two public hearings in two separate weeks when proposing any increase in the effective tax rate. This ensures Texas taxpayers will have adequate notification and opportunity to hold elected officials accountable on the total amount of property taxes being assessed. The truth-in-taxation concept is based on the Lubbock City Council model. The Texas Association of REALTORS® supported this legislation.
